چکیده

This paper presents the results of a Spitzer IRAC 3−8 μm photometric search for warm dust orbiting 17 nearby, metal-rich white dwarfs, 15 of which apparently have hydrogen dominated atmospheres (type DAZ). G166-58, G29-38, and GD 362 manifest excess emission in their IRAC fluxes and the latter two are known to harbor dust grains warm enough to radiate detectable emission at near-infrared wavelengths as short as 2 μm. Their IRAC fluxes display differences compatible with a relatively larger amount of cooler dust at GD 362. G166-58 is presently unique in that it appears to exhibit excess flux only at wavelengths longer than about 5 μm. Evidence is presented that this mid-infrared emission is most likely associated with the white dwarf, indicating that G166-58 bears circumstellar dust no warmer than T ∼ 400 K. The remaining 14 targets reveal no reliable midinfrared excess, indicating the majority of DAZ stars do not have warm debris disks sufficiently opaque to be detected by IRAC. Subject headings: circumstellar matter— infrared: stars– minor planets, asteroids— planetary systems – stars: abundances— stars: evolution— stars: individual (G166-58, G29-38, GD 362, PG 0235+064)— white dwarfs

Spitzer Observations of GD 362 and Other Metal - Rich

A Spitzer IRAC survey of 17 nearby metal-rich white dwarfs, nominally DAZ stars, reveals excess emission from only 3 targets: G29-38, GD 362 and G167-8. Observations of GD 362 with all three Spitzer instruments reveals a warm (≈ 1000 K) dust continuum, very strong silicate emission, and the likely presence of cooler (≈ 500 K) dust. While there is a general similarity between the mid-infrared sp...

Infrared Signatures of Disrupted Minor Planets at White Dwarfs

Spitzer Space Observatory IRAC and MIPS photometric observations are presented for 20 white dwarfs with Teff . 20, 000 K and metal-contaminated photospheres. A warm circumstellar disk is detected at GD 16 and likely at PG 1457−086, while the remaining targets fail to reveal mid-infrared excess typical of dust disks, including a number of heavily polluted stars. Extending previous studies, over ...

Degenerates with Dusty Disks: White Dwarfs and Cataclysmic Variables in the Infrared

Recent infrared observations, particularly from the Spitzer Space Telescope andWidefield Infrared Survey Explorer, of white dwarfs, cataclysmic variables and other interacting compact binaries, have revealed the presence of dust in many systems. I briefly review the discovery and observational properties of dust around white dwarfs and cataclysmic variables.

Spitzer Irac Observations of White Dwarfs. Ii. Massive Planetary and Cold Brown Dwarf Companions to Young and Old Degenerates

This paper presents a sensitive and comprehensive IRAC 3 − 8 μm photometric survey of white dwarfs for companions in the planetary mass regime with temperatures cooler than the known T dwarfs. The search focuses on descendents of intermediate mass stars with M & 3 M⊙ whose inner, few hundred AU regions cannot be probed effectively for massive planets and brown dwarfs by any alternative existing...

The New Class of Dusty Daz White Dwarfs

Our mid-infrared survey of 124 white dwarfs with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the IRAC imager has revealed an infrared excess associatedwith thewhite dwarf WD2115 560 naturally explained by circumstellar dust. This object is the fourth white dwarf observed to have circumstellar dust. All four are DAZ white dwarfs, i.e., they have both photospheric Balmer lines and photospheric metal lines.We...
